Learn all the important Compositional Skills you need and compose your own music in 10 months only!

The aim of the course is to help our students develop strong compositional skills, in order to compose their own music. All types of music have 4 essential ingredients that need to be created and used to create a successful arrangement: Rhythm, Harmony, Melody and Bass.

By learning how to create those musical elements and studying other important factors, such as instrumentation, organology and arrangement, our students even if they are new to composing music, will have all the knowledge they need, by the end of the course, to create their own music.

The students through the study of music theory/ harmony and practice on the Keyboard, will learn to play and construct melodies, learn to combine them with chord progressions and build the structure of the harmony of their own music.

Through the study of organology, our students learn the characteristics of the different types of instruments, how they are constructed, what type of sound they can produce and how these sounds are produced. Our students also study the instruments’ capabilities and develop a deeper understanding on how these instruments are used, to create a musical arrangement.

Another important part of the course is Musical analysis. During this part of the course our students learn how to examine the instrumentation, musical structure and orchestration of music, from various electronic, modern and popular types of music. The analysis of various important aspects of a piece of music, provides our students with valuable knowledge, on how to create a successful composition.

These analytical skills are further enhanced by regular Oral training, which is important on developing the cognitive musical skills. Learning to critically listen to a piece of music, gives our students the skill to be able to identify various specific elements within a piece of music, and therefore helping with its analysis.

Course Structure

01. Music Theory

Our students start from learning how to read the notes on the stave (Note names, note values and rests, cleffs, tempo and time signatures, dynamics and accents), and as they progress, they learn all different Major and Minor (Melodic and Harmonic) music scales, and even how to notate scores for drums.

02. Piano

Even from the first lesson, our students get started with learning how to play on the keyboard. Our students start from developing the correct body posture and finger placement on the piano and learn to read and play music from written notation. The music theory and harmony that is taught is directly put into practice. At the same time our students are having fun learning to play popular songs, which progressively become more and more challenging, throughout the course. Our students that way develop their playing and reading skills, as well as their compositional skills.

03. Harmony

During the harmony lessons, our students learn how to build chords, they learn all different types of chords (Major, Minor, Diminished, Augmented and 7’s) and how to use them to build chord progressions for the construction of a song.

04. Orchestration and Arrangement

During this part of the course, students learn how to develop their Orchestration and Arrangement skills. They accomplish this by learning all different chords and by combining them to build chord progressions. Based on the harmonic structure that they have built, they will then learn how to create melodies. They will also learn to listen and analyse chord progressions and the structure of popular songs in various musical styles and in particular the electronic musical styles.

05. Organology

In this part of the course, students study the various attributes and characteristics of different instruments (such as Drums, Electric Guitar and Electric Bass) and examine their role in a song according to each musical style.

06. Listening and Practical training

Listening and Practical training helps our students develop their musical analytical skills, which in turn helps them identify important musical elements in a song, such as song structure, orchestration, melodic and harmonic structure and development. Oral training in combination with practical exercise on the piano further supports our students to develop their compositional skills.
